They can learn from experience, and can derive conclusions from a complex and seemingly unrelated set of information. In recent years, computer scientists have begun to come up with ingenious methods for deducing the analytic strategies adopted by neural nets. So around the turn of the century, neural networks were supplanted by support vector machines, an alternative approach to machine learning that’s based on some very clean and elegant mathematics. Learning

Feedforward neural networks, or multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs), are what we’ve primarily been focusing on within this article. While these neural networks are also commonly referred to as MLPs, it’s important to note that they are actually comprised of sigmoid neurons, not perceptrons, as most real-world problems are nonlinear.
